Art x Embodiment by Circling Studios

After our Art x Care symposium last fall, we’re thrilled to announce the next Circling Studios event this spring! You’re invited to join us on May 30 for an afternoon of movement, artmaking, and reflection together with some of our favorite artists. [Check out past Circling features of Austen and Marilyn linked here.]

Art x Embodiment: Creativity at Home in the Body

May 30, 2026 | 2-4:30pm | Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Join Circling Studios and artists Austen Bohmer, Marilyn Mitchell, and Veronica Velasquez for a reflective afternoon considering the embodied self as the site of creativity.

Your ticket includes:
🎤 Artist panel discussion and Q&A
🕺 The Vessel, a 45-minute movement practice
✂️ Hands-on artmaking, all supplies provided
🫖 Light refreshments

The day begins as we listen in on a dynamic conversation among these artists working across disciplines and engaging their bodies through creative practice as well as considering physical experiences more broadly in their personal and professional lives.

Next, The Vessel is a new movement practice for creatives by Austen Bohmer. Drawing inspiration from Butoh, yoga, Jungian Dreamwork, and dancefloors around the world, The Vessel helps you quiet your mind and connect to your body. This is where your creative impulse comes alive.

Finally, create something with your hands. Guided by the Circling team, wrap up the day with a reflective artmaking opportunity and connect what you’ve learned to your own creative practice.

You’ll leave having moved your body, practiced stillness, created with your hands, and engaged in reflection and conversation with fellow artists. We hope you walk away feeling grounded, connected, inspired, and ready to integrate these experiences into the next steps of your artistic path.

Free Circling Workshop: How to Talk About Your Art

This year, speak confidently about your art and creative practice.

Join us for a free, two-part workshop filled with guided reflections, exercises, and tips on speaking and writing with clarity and specificity about your work presented in partnership with our friends at Paradice Palase.

Session one will cover speaking about your art in an audience-aware, multi-sensory, and grounded way as you prepare for studio visits, exhibition tours, or artist talks.

In session two, learn how to hone descriptions of your work for written purposes: communicate clearly and with a goal in mind as you draft grant applications, artist statements, and more.

Attend one session, or both — each can stand alone, and we will share the recording with all who subscribe after the workshop.

Art x Care : in photos

Art x Care took place on October 25, 2025 at the Delight Factory in Brooklyn, NY. This symposium hosted by Circling Studios explored the question, “How do our needs, relationships, and caregiving responsibilities complicate and contribute to artistic practice?”

The day included an opening meditation, two panel conversations with artists working across disciplines, and a guided reflection on our own ecosystems of care. Our featured artists and speakers included: Jessica Angima, Maria De Victoria, Ziedah Diata, Blair Goldberg, Marley McClean, and Sara J. Winston. My Circling creative partner Krystiana and I produced, hosted, and moderated the day.

Art is for the people

In a little under four years at the Whitney Museum of American Art, my small but mighty team (Taylor! Alice!) hosted well over 350k attendees at member events, Free Friday Nights, and a slew of other gatherings. From intimate tours and gallery walks to full-museum celebrations, we connected members and visitors with art and artists, provided opportunities for people to create something of their own, and evolved the Whitney as a space that’s for communing with others in addition to seeing great art. We worked with so many talented artists, performers, and speakers and hopefully made the museum feel a little more welcoming along the way.

It’s a rare opportunity to build something brand-new within an established institution, so I’m so proud to have led the programming and operations build-out of the Whitney’s Free Friday Nights alongside my thoughtful, brilliant, and cool-under-pressure colleagues. I believe deeply that art is for everyone, and developing this program which has welcomed thousands of people into the museum for the first time, diversified the Whitney’s audiences to more closely reflect the city we live in, and opened new lines of collaboration with artists and community organizations is work I am grateful to have been a part of.

As of one month ago, I’ve shifted into a period of focusing on my own art practice, independent projects like Circling, and event production / project management work for creative organizations but I certainly intend to bring this ethos along with me. Art is for the people ❤

As we round out 2025 and enter the new year, I’d love to host folks for studio visits or to grab coffee to hear about what you’re working on. Please send me a message or email, and we can get something scheduled soon.
